Staff Biographies

Joy Pritts • e-mail

Joy Pritts is the founding director of the Center of Medical Record Rights and Privacy at Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute. Her primary areas of research include the privacy of medical information and individuals’ rights to their own medical information. Ms. Pritts conducts legal research and analysis on both state and federal privacy laws. Her research encompasses a broad range of topics including the implementation of the Federal Health Privacy Rule (also known as the HIPAA Privacy Rule), the interplay of the federal and state privacy laws, and the access to and use of medical information by financial institutions.

Ms. Pritts writes extensively on medical records rights and privacy issues. She is the prime author of Your Medical Record Rights, state guides on consumers' rights to see, get a copy of, and amend their own health information. Ms. Pritts also speaks extensively on medical privacy issues before diverse stakeholders including consumer groups, professional associations, and governmental bodies. S he has testified before Congress on issues related to privacy and the use of medical information.

Ms. Pritts holds a law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College.  

Nina Kudszus • e-mail

Nina Kudszus is a legal intern at the Health Policy Institute. Her work focuses on privacy of medical information and the interplay of the federal and state privacy laws.

Prior to joining the Institute, Ms. Kudszus worked for three years at the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence – Orange County / Community Alliance Network where she focused on alcohol, tobacco and drug policy issues.

Ms. Kudszus is currently in her second year of law school at the George Washington University, and holds a B.A. in Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of California, Irvine.
